COURSE DETAILS

"Fingerstyle Jazz and the Art of Solo Playing" by Francesco Buzzurro is a journey through advanced solo guitar techniques, where each lesson is a building block in building a deep and functional understanding of the art of solo playing.

Designed for both emerging and veteran guitarists, the course covers such essentials as optimal use of the right hand, mastery of scales and arpeggios, and innovative improvisational techniques.

The first part of the course focuses on the right hand, the main engine in fingerstyle. Buzzurro introduces exercises to develop finger precision and independence, which are essential for performing complex arpeggios and maintaining a steady pulse while weaving melodies and bass. This is followed by lessons on scales, with a focus on how to use them effectively in solo contexts, increasing fluidity and speed of execution.

A distinctive element of the course is the approach to position playing. Buzzurro teaches in-depth knowledge of the fretboard and tonality so as to unleash the guitarist's creative potential, allowing him or her to navigate between different positions with ease. This ties in closely with an in-depth study of musical intervals, learning to recognize and use them to enrich one's improvisations.

Improvisational techniques are a mainstay of the course. Through examination of standard pieces and introduction to techniques such as alternate bass, Buzzurro guides students through complex processes to develop musical phrases that are expressive and technically sound. Teaching is enriched with analysis of how target and guide notes can be used to structure evolved phrasing.

The lessons advance to more complex concepts, such as the use of chromatic and diatonic approaches and rhythmic variations that enrich performances. Buzzurro also explains how the concepts of contrary motion and chord substitutions can transform a simple harmonic progression into a complex, multifaceted work.

The course not only imparts technical knowledge but also encourages a holistic approach to music, where theory, technique and expression come together to form a complete and versatile musician. With lessons full of practical examples and creative insights, Francesco Buzzurro not only teaches guitar playing: he trains artists capable of communicating through the strings.

FRANCESCO BUZZURRO

Francesco Buzzurro has been playing guitar since the age of six and combines his passion for classical music with a deep research in the field of jazz, which led him to develop early on a particular way of improvising as a soloist.

Graduating in Classical Guitar, Foreign Languages and Jazz Music with 110 honorable mention cum laude, he joined the Sicilian Jazz Orchestra and shared the stage with sacred monsters of international jazz music including Phil Woods, Arturo Sandoval, Diane Shurr, Bireli Lagréne, Toots Thielemans, Bob Mintzer, Christian McBride Yamandù Costa and many others.

He collaborates with the Sicilian Symphony Orchestra and with some of the best-known exponents of Italian pop such as Antonella Ruggiero, Fabio Concato, and the late Lucio Dalla. He is the author of the soundtrack for "Io Ricordo," a docu-fiction about mafia victims by the Muccino brothers for which he was awarded by President Napolitano.

A borderline and out-of-the-box guitarist, he teaches unified seminars for the classical and jazz guitar departments at the University of Southern California USC in Los Angeles and has recorded numerous records under his own name in quartets and as a soloist, including the highly successful"The Explorer."

Awarded the title of Ambassador of Peace with Music by the Lions Delegate to the UN in 2009 in Minneapolis, he is also a professor of Jazz Guitar at the "Scarlatti" Conservatory of Palermo.

Francesco uses archtop nylon strings by Mirko Borghino and Savarez nylon strings.

He carries out an intense international concert activity and also holds master classes with strong student followings at Italian and foreign academies, music schools and universities.
